টাঙ্গুয়া হাওড় নামে পরিচিত টাঙ্গুয়ার হাওড় এদেশের অন্যতম জলাভূমি যেটি আন্তর্জাতিকভাবেও বহুলভাবে সমাদৃত। প্রায় ৪৬টি গ্রামসহ গঠিত এই হাওড়ের আয়তন প্রায় ১০০ কিলোমিটার যার মধ্যে ২৮০২.৩৬ হেক্টর এলাকা হল জলাভূমি। প্রায় ৪০০০০ মানুষ এই হাওড়ের ওপর জীবিকা নির্বাহ করে। এখানকার প্রাকৃতিক সম্পদের মাত্রাতিরিক্ত ব্যবহারের কারনে সৃষ্ট নাজুক অবস্থার দরুন বাংলাদেশ সরকার ১৯৯৯ সালে টাঙ্গুয়ারহাওড়কে পরিবেশগত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ এলাকা হিসেবে ঘোষণা করে। ২০০০ সালে এই হাওড়কে রামসার সাইট অর্থাৎ আন্তর্জাতিকভাবে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ স্থান হিসেবে ঘোষণা করা হয়। এই ঘোষণার কারনে সরকার এই হাওড়ের প্রাকৃতিক সম্পদ রক্ষা করতে বাধ্য থাকবে এবং সরকার এই মর্মে ইতিমধ্যেই কিছু পদক্ষেপ গ্রহন করেছে।
মাছের অন্যতম উৎস হওয়ার কারনে এদেশের মাছ চাষের ক্ষেত্রে এই হাওড়টি অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভুমিকা পালন করে চলেছে। ১৯৯৯-২০০০ সালে এই হাওড় থেকে মাছ চাষ বাবদ সরকার প্রায় ৭,০৭৩,১৮৪ টাকা রাজস্ব আদায় করে। এই হাওড়ে প্রায় ১৪০ প্রজাতির অধিক মিঠা পানির মাছ পাওয়া যায় যেগুলোর মধ্যে আছেঃ আয়ের মাছ, গাং মাগুর মাছ, বাইম মাছ, তারা মাছ, গুতুম মাছ, গুলশা মাছ, ট্যাংরা মাছ, টিটনা মাছ, গড়িয়া মাছ, বেটি মাছ, কাকিয়া মাছ ইত্যাদি। প্রতি বছর শীত মৌসুমে প্রায় ২০০ প্রজাতির অতিথি পাখি এই হাওড়ে এসে থাকে। এই জলাভূমিতে বিভিন্ন প্রকার মিঠা পানির উদ্ভিদও জন্মে থাকে যেমনঃ হিজল গাছ, করছ গাছ, গুল্লি গাছ, বালুয়া গাছ, বন তুলশি গাছ, নলখাগড়া গাছ ইত্যাদি।
এখানকার বেশ কিছু উদ্ভিদ বিলুপ্ত হওয়ার পথে রয়েছে যেমনঃ হিজল (ব্যারিংটোনিয়া একুটেংগুলা), ক্লেমাটিস ক্যডমিয়া, ক্রাটাভা নুরভালা, ইউরাইল ফেরক্স, নেলুম্ব নুসিফেরা, অট্টেলিয়া আলিস মইডস, অক্সিস্তেল্মা সেকামনভার, সেকামন, পঙ্গামিয়া পিনাটটা, রসা ক্লিনফাইলা, টাইফা ইত্যাদি।
How to go
It is located in the Dharampasha and Tahirpur Upazila of North-Eastern part in Sunamganj District. So, the best way to reach there is to take bus from Sunamganj and reach Dharmapasha Upazila. From Dharmapasha Upazila, take CNG or Rickshaw to reach that haor.

You can reach Sunamganj only by road. There is no direct rail, air or water transportation system available.
