Shah of Shahpori Island stands for Muhammad Azam Shah alias Shah Suja, a son of Aurangzeb, the last Mogul Emperor of India, and Pori stands for Pori Begum, wife of Bahadur Shah alias Shah Badar, another son of Aurangzeb. In a war back in 1689 sons of Aurangzeb were defeated by the forces of Burmese King Sudurma. Bahadur Shah was killed in the battle. Arrested by the Burmese forces a few surviving members of Mogul army including Azam Shah and Pori Banu (wife of the deceased Bahadur Shah) were ordered to board a country boat with all their hands tied from behind.
Having been towed to the mouth of the Naaf River (previously Busitang River) the boat was scuttled by making holes in its bottom drowning all the captives. Azam Shah and Pori Banu who survived miraculously took shelter in this very island which at that ancient time was known as Kuanka Island. After the names of Aurangzeb’s surviving son and daughter-in-law the Kuanka Island later became popular as Shahpori Island. Shahpori Island, though still called as an island, was in fact turned into a peninsula in early 60s by artificial siltation through cross-damming.

শাহপরী দ্বীপের ‘শাহ’ নামটি এসেছে ভারতবর্ষের সর্বশেষ মুঘল সম্রাট আওরঙ্গজেবের পুত্র মুহাম্মদ আজম শাহ ওরফে শাহ সুজার নাম থেকে এবং ‘পরী’ নামটি এসেছে আওরঙ্গজেবের অপর পুত্র বাহাদুর শাহ ওরফে শাহ বদরের স্ত্রী পরী বেগমের নাম থেকে। ১৮৬৯ সালে সংঘটিত এক যুদ্ধে আওরঙ্গজেবের পুত্ররা বার্মিজ রাজা সুদুরমার কাছে পরাজিত হয় এবং সেই যুদ্ধে বাহাদুর শাহ নিহত হন। আজম শাহ এবং পরী বানুসহ মুঘল সেনাবাহিনীর কিছু বেঁচে যাওয়া সদস্যদের হাত পেছনে বেধে নৌকায় করে নাফ নদীতে (তৎকালীন বুসিটাং নদী) ছেড়ে দেওয়া হয়। সেসময় নৌকায় ফুটো করে দেওয়াতে নৌকাটি ডুবে যায় এবং সেইসাথে নৌকার সকল আরোহী পানিতে ডুবে যায়। তবে আজম শাহ এবং পরী বানু সৌভাগ্যক্রমে বেঁচে যান এবং এই দ্বীপে (সেসময় এই দ্বীপের নাম ছিল কুয়ানকা দ্বীপ) আশ্রয় গ্রহন করেন। পরবর্তীতে আওরঙ্গজেবের পুত্র এবং পুত্রবধুর নামানুসারে এই দ্বীপের নাম হয় শাহপরীর দ্বীপ। শাহপরীর দ্বীপকে ষাটের দশকে বাঁধ নির্মাণের মাধ্যমে উপত্যকায় পরিণত করা হলেও এটিকে এখনও দ্বীপ বলা হয়ে থাকে।

“দ্বীপ কন্যা” নামে পরিচিত এই চর কুকরি মুকরি হল ভোলার অন্যতম প্রাকৃতিক সৌন্দর্যমণ্ডিত স্থান। প্রকৃতিপ্রেমী যেকোনো পর্যটকের কাছে এখানকার ম্যানগ্রুভ জঙ্গল, সাগর এবং বন্যপ্রাণী নিঃসন্দেহে উপভোগ্য। ধারনা করা হয় এই দ্বীপটির উৎপত্তি হয়েছিল চারশ থেকে পাঁচশ বছর পূর্বে।

Dhal Char is an island located at the south of Bhola District in Bangladesh. It is a Union under Monpura Thana of Bhola. Dal Char is surrounded by the river Meghna. The east part of the island is decreasing day by day because of river bank erosion. The island is marked as one of the most vulnerable areas for natural disaster. The population is approximately 13000 of which 5000 are floating people and 1500 are households.

Initially Nijhum Dwip or Nijhum Island was known as Char Osman, after the name of a brave settler Osman who established the first settlement with his buffalo & cattle. Later the government's high officials have changed that name. But still in documents, the island is known as Char Osman. This island is an ideal place for tourists, especially during the winter.
A cluster of islands (mainly, Ballar Char, Kamlar Char, Char Osman and Char Muri) emerged in the early 1950s as an alluvium in the shallow estuary of the Bay of Bengal on the south of Noakhali. These new sandbanks first drew the notice of a group of fishermen, who named it Baular Char (literally, the alluvium of sand) later transformed into Ballar Char. Occupying an area of 14,050 acres the island situated between 21 0 1 / to 22 0 6 /north latitude and 90 0 3 / to 91 0 4 / east longitude.
Migratory Birds in Nijhum Dwip: During winter, thousands of migratory birds flock in to island. The fishermen use the airy and sunny land as an ideal place for drying their catches from the sea. Sometimes many of them also construct straw huts on the island as seasonal residences.
In 1974 the Forest Department took an afforestation program for a duration of twenty years in the north side of the island. Covering an area of nine thousand acres, it has now developed into a deep forest with a variety of plant species. Among the trees Keora is much seen. Besides this Gewa, Kankra, Bain, Babul, Karamja, Pashur and many other species are seen.
On 8 April 2001 the government declared the 40390 acres of forest of Jahajmara range including 9550 acres of forest land on Nijhum Dwip as a National Park for the protection and development of the biodiversity of the forest. But in practice, there a very lazy appearance of that declaration.
It was named 'Nijhum Dwip' by former Minister Amirul Islam Kalam in 1979 observing its isolation and mild nature.

নিঝুম দ্বীপে সর্বপ্রথম মহিষ ও গবাদিপশু নিয়ে বসতি স্থাপনকারী সাহসী জনৈক ওসমানের নামে এই দ্বীপের নাম ছিল চর ওসমান। পরবর্তীতে সরকারের উচ্চপদে আসীন কর্মকর্তারা এই দ্বীপের নাম পরিবর্তন করেন। তবে, এখনও নথিপত্রে নিঝুম দ্বীপ চর ওসমান নামেই পরিচিত। পর্যটকদের বেড়ানোর জন্য (বিশেষ করে শীতকালে) এই দ্বীপটি একটি আদর্শ স্থান।
