Brief

Narsingdi is famous for Loom & textile industry. Baburhat (বাবুরহাট), also known as ‘The Manchester of the east’, is situated in this district. Baburhat is one of the traditional and the biggest wholesale point of local fabrics in Bangladesh, Just an hour drive from the capital. The wholesale shops of this Hat, have been witnessing the buzz of buyers. There are about 3000 shops at the market which is situated beside the Dhaka-Sylhet highway. Good communication system, bargain price and quality products are attracting the buyers at the market, from where about 500 trucks leave for other districts daily. On the roadside, porters are busy unloading bundles of clothes from trucks. Wholesalers from different parts of the country come here on the weekly market days(Friday, Saturday and Sunday).

Most of the local fabric industries were established in this district where saree and lungi are mainly produced along with other clothings. A trader said, “heavy trading takes place every year particularly centering the two big Islamic festivals, Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Azha.” Traders in Baburhat placed orders for clothes with weavers from Pabna, Sirajganj, Shahjadpur, Shivrampur at Dohar & Narsingdi for delivery before Eid. They supply the designs and tell the weavers the numbers of pieces they want, a few months before any occasion.

This market has a great influence on the National Economic growth. Transactions worth crores of taka everyday at Baburhat indicate the strength of the local apparel sector. Thousands of people are employed with the whole process from spinning yarn, dyeing, marketing, transportation and accessories.

You will not be able to even move during the market days as almost every inch of space at Baburhat is filled with business people. Everybody is involved in some kind of business here at the weekly market.
