History of Bangladesh Tea Research Institute dates back to 1840 when a pioneer tea garden was established on the slopes of the hills in Chittagong where the Chittagong Club now stands. First commercial tea garden was established in 1857 at Mulnichera in Sylhet. During the partition in 1947, Bangladesh (the then East Pakistan) owned 103 tea estates, covering 26,734 hectares of tea plantation with annual production of 18.36 M. Kg. with a yield of about 639 Kg. per ha. Home consumption was around 13.64 M. Kg. up to 1955. After that home consumption went up rapidly and Government imposed 3% mandatory extension of tea area per year in 1961. Ten years later by 1970, tea area was extended to 42,658 hectares and production was increased to 31.38 M. Kg.
Bangladesh Tea Research Institute (BTRI) is an autonomous organization under the Bangladesh Tea Board (BTB). The tea industry had very limited access to technology immediately after the partition of India in 1947. To solve various problems of growing and manufacturing tea, and to establish the industry on sound scientific footing, the Pakistan Tea Board decided in 1952 to establish a tea research station of its own. As a result the Pakistan Tea Research Station came at its present location at Srimangal on the 28th February, 1957. After liberation, the research station was raised to the status of an institute and names the Bangladesh Tea Research Institute (BTRI) in 1973. Now BTRI is one of the 10 National Agricultural Research System (NARS) institutes of the country.

বাংলাদেশ চা গবেষণা ইন্সটিটিউটের ইতিহাসের আরম্ভ হয় ১৮৪০ সালে যখন চট্রগ্রামের পাহাড়ের ঢালে (বর্তমানে যেখানে চট্রগ্রাম ক্লাব অবস্থিত) স্থাপন করা হয়েছিল একটি চা বাগান। ১৮৫৭ সালে সিলেটের মালিনীছড়া চা বাগান প্রতিষ্ঠিত করা হয় বাণিজ্যিকভিত্তিতে প্রথমবারের মত চা উৎপাদন করার জন্য। ১৯৪৭ সালে দেশবিভাগের সময় বাংলাদেশে (তদানীন্তন পূর্ব পাকিস্তানে) চা চাষ করা হত ২৬,৭৩৫ হেক্টর জমিতে ১০৩টি চা বাগানে। সেসময় সারা বছর ১৮.৩৬ মিলিয়ন কেজি চা উৎপাদিত হত যা ছিল প্রতি হেক্টরে ৬৩৯ কেজি । ১৯৫৫ সাল পর্যন্ত গৃহ্পর্যায়ে চায়ের চাহিদা ছিল ১৩.৬৪ মিলিয়ন কেজি। এরপর চায়ের চাহিদা দ্রুত বৃদ্ধি পেলে ১৯৬১ সালে সরকার প্রতি বছর চা চাষের জন্য ৩% হারে জমি বৃদ্ধি করা বাধ্যতামূলক করে। এরই ফলশ্রুতিতে দশ বছর পর ১৯৭০ সালে চা চাষের জমির পরিমান বেড়ে দাড়ায় ৪২,৬৫৮ হেক্টরে এবং বার্ষিক উৎপাদন বেড়ে দাড়ায় ৩১.৩৮ মিলিয়ন কেজি।
বাংলাদেশ চা বোর্ডের (বিটিবি)অধীনে একটি স্বায়ত্তশাসিত সংস্থা হল বাংলাদেশ চা গবেষণা ইন্সটিটিউট (বিটিআরআই)। ১৯৪৭ সালের দেশ বিভাগের পর এ দেশের চা শিল্পতে প্রযুক্তির ব্যাবহার ছিল সীমিত। চা চাষ এবং উৎপাদনের ক্ষেত্রে বিভিন্ন সমস্যার সমাধান এবং বিজ্ঞানভিত্তিক চা শিল্প প্রতিষ্ঠার লক্ষ্য নিয়ে তৎকালীন পাকিস্তান চা বোর্ড ১৯৫২ সালে তাদের নিজেদের একটি গবেষণা কেন্দ্র প্রতিষ্ঠা করে। সেই ফলশ্রুতিতে ১৯৫৭ সালের ২৮ ফেব্রুয়ারি তৎকালীন পাকিস্তান চা গবেষণা কেন্দ্র শ্রীমঙ্গলের বর্তমান ঠিকানায় যাত্রা শুরু করে। স্বাধীনতার পর ১৯৭৩ সালে এই কেন্দ্রটিকে একটি বাংলাদেশ চা গবেষণা ইন্সটিটিউটে (বিটিআরআই) রুপান্তর করা হয়। বর্তমানে দেশের ১০টি জাতীয় কৃষি গবেষণা পদ্ধতির (এনএআরএস) একটি হল বাংলাদেশ চা গবেষণা ইন্সটিটিউট।

BRRI or Bangladesh Rice Research Institute is an agricultural research institute in Bangladesh, located in Gazipur. Bangladesh Rice Research Institute is an autonomous research organization established in 1970 at Joydebpur, Gazipur, for conducting research towards development of rice varieties with desirable characteristics and their management technologies for different ecosystems. The Director General (DG) is the head of the organization. In addition to the headquarters and central station at Joydebpur, the institute is supported by nine regional stations at Barisal, Bhanga, Khulna, Kushtia, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Habiganj, Comilla and Sonagazi. There are 18 research divisions to take care of different disciplines: Plant Breeding, Genetic Resources and Seed, Biotechnology, Grain Quality and Nutrition, Agronomy, Soil Science, Irrigation and Water Management, Plant Physiology, Entomology, Plant Pathology, Rice Farming Systems, Agricultural Statistics, Agricultural Economics, Farm Management, Farm Machinery and Post-Harvest Technology, Workshop Machinery and Maintenance, and Adaptive Research and Training. Research activities are operated under seven programmer areas which include varietal development, crop-soil-water management, pest management, rice-based farming systems, farm mechanization, socioeconomics and policy, and technology transfer.
The major achievements of BRRI has been the development of 65 high yielding modern variety (MV) along with four hybrid rice variety strains adaptable to different ecosystems since its establishment. Thirteen of these MV rice are suitable for cultivation in both the Boro and Aush seasons, seven in the Boro season and five in the Aush season, and twelve in the transplanted Aman (T Aman) season. With appropriate management, and under favorable soil conditions, these MV rice may yield 5–6 m tons/ha in the Boro, 3–4 m tons/ha in the Aush, and 4–5 m tons/ha in the T Aman seasons.
During the early years of research, BRRI followed the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in developing semi-dwarf photoperiod-insensitive varieties. Over time, BRRI scientists deviated from the IRRI concept of dwarfism for high yield, and restructured the IR8 plant type to suit local agro ecological conditions. Intermediate-height plants with relatively short growth cycles and mild photoperiod-sensitivity were developed to suit the local agro ecological conditions and meet the socioeconomic demand of farmers.
MV rice of BRRI presently cover 90% of the Boro (winter rice), 25-30% of the Aush (summer rice), and 50-55% of the T Aman (wet season rice) areas of Bangladesh. These varieties together cover 56% of the total rice area and account for about 74% of the total annual rice production of the country. BRRI MV rice and modern rice production technologies played the key role in boosting annual rice production in Bangladesh from 9.93 million m tons of clean rice in 1972-73 to nearly 34 million m tons of clean rice at present.
BRRI cereal chemists regularly evaluate rice grain quality in terms of taste, cooking quality, milling outturn, aroma, protein and amylase contents etc., helping plant breeders develop varieties with desirable grain quality. BRRI now has 134 scientists and 344 supporting staff working at Joydebpur (HQ) and its 9 regional stations. The institute has active research collaboration schemes with different national and international organizations.

উন্নত বৈশিষ্ট্যসহ বিভিন্ন জাতের ধান উদ্ভাবন এবং বিভিন্ন পরিবেশে এসব ধান চাষের প্রযুক্তি উদ্ভাবনের লক্ষ্যে ১৯৭০ সালে গাজীপুরের জয়দেবপুরে বিআরআরআই প্রতিষ্ঠা করা হয়। এই ইন্সটিটিউটের প্রধান একজন মহাপরিচালক। জয়দেবপুরে সদর দফতর এবং প্রধান কেন্দ্র ছাড়াও বরিশাল, ভাঙ্গা, খুলনা, কুষ্টিয়া, রাজশাহী, রংপুর, হবিগঞ্জ, কুমিল্লা এবং সোনাগাজীতে এই ইন্সটিটিউটের নয়টি আঞ্চলিক কেন্দ্র আছে। ১৮ টি গবেষণা বিভাগ বিভিন্ন বিষয়ের দেখাশোনা করে থাকে। এগুলো হলঃ গাছের বংশবৃদ্ধি, বীজ এবং জেনেটিক রিসোর্স, ধানের মান এবং পুষ্টি, এগ্রোনোমি, মাটি বিজ্ঞান, সেচ এবং পানি ব্যবস্থাপনা, উদ্ভিদের শারিরবৃত্য, পতঙ্গতত্ত্ব, উদ্ভিদ প্যাথলজি, ধান চাষের ব্যবস্থা, কৃষি পরিসংখ্যান, কৃষি অর্থনীতি, খামার ব্যবস্থাপনা, খামারের যন্ত্রপাতি এবং চাষ পরবর্তী প্রযুক্তি, ওয়ার্কশপের যন্ত্রপাতি এবং রক্ষনাবেক্ষন, এবং গবেষণা ও প্রশিক্ষন। এছাড়া সাতটি বিভাগে গবেষণা কার্যক্রম পরিচালিত হয়। এসবের মধ্যে আছেঃ বৈচিত্র্যময় উদ্ভাবন, শস্য-মাটি-পানির ব্যবস্থাপনা, কিটপতঙ্গের ব্যবস্থাপনা, ধান ভিত্তিক কৃষি ব্যবস্থা, খামার যান্ত্রিকীকরন, সামাজিক ও অর্থনৈতিক নীতি নির্ধারণ, এবং প্রযুক্তি স্থানান্তর।
প্রতিষ্ঠার পর থেকে বিআরআরআই এর প্রধান অর্জনগুলোর মধ্যে আছে ৬৫ টি উন্নত (এমভি ধান) এবং আধুনিক জাতের ধানের সাথে চারটি হাইব্রিড প্রজাতির ধানের উদ্ভাবন যেগুলো বিভিন্ন পরিবেশের সাথে মানিয়ে নিতে সক্ষম। এসকল প্রজাতির মধ্যে তেরো জাতের ধান বোরো এবং আউশ মৌসুমে, সাত জাতের ধান বোরো মৌসুমে, পাঁচ জাতের ধান আউশ মৌসুমে এবং বারো জাতের ধান চাষ করা যায় আমন মৌসুমে। যথাযথ ব্যবস্থাপনা এবং মাটির সহনীয় অবস্থা বজায় থাকলে এসব জাত থেকে বোরো মৌসুমে প্রতি হেক্টরে পাঁচ থেকে ছয় মেট্রিকটন, আউশ মৌসুমে তিন থেকে চার মেট্রিকটন এবং আমন মৌসুমে চার থেকে পাঁচ মেট্রিকটন ধান উৎপাদন করা সম্ভব।
গবেষণা শুরু করার পরপর বিআরআরআই সেমি ডোয়ারফ ফটো পিরিয়ড সহনীয় জাতের উদ্ভাবনের জন্য আন্তর্জাতিক ধান গবেষণা ইন্সটিটিউট (আইআরআরআই)কে অনুসরণ করে। সময়ের সাথে সাথে বিআরআরআই এর বিজ্ঞানীরা অধিক ফলনের জন্য আইআরআরআই প্রদত্ত খাটো চারার ব্যবহারের ধারনা থেকে সরে আসে এবং কৃষকদের সামাজিক ও অর্থনৈতিক চাহিদা পূরণের পাশাপাশি স্থানীয় কৃষি বান্ধব পরিবেশের সাথে মানিয়ে নিতে মাঝারি উচ্চতার স্বল্প আয়ুর ধানগাছ উদ্ভাবন করে যেগুলোর ফটো পিরিয়ড স্পর্শকাতরতা সামান্যই।
বিআরআরআই উদ্ভাবিত এমভি ধানগুলো বর্তমানে বাংলাদেশের ৯০% বোরো (শীতকালীন ধান) এলাকা, ২৫%-৩০% আউশ (গ্রীষ্মকালীন ধান) এবং ৫০%-৫৫% আমন (বর্ষাকালীন ধান) এলাকায় চাষ হচ্ছে। এসকল ধানের প্রজাতিগুলো দেশের মোট ধান চাষের ৫৬% এলাকায় চাষ হচ্ছে এবং দেশের বার্ষিক ৭৪% চাল উৎপাদন এসব ধান থেকেই হয়ে থাকে। দেশে বার্ষিক চালের উৎপাদন ১৯৭২-৭৩ সালের ৯.৯৩ মিলিয়ন মেট্রিকটন থেকে বর্তমানের প্রায় ৩৪ মিলিয়ন মেট্রিকটনে বৃদ্ধি করার পেছনে বিআরআরআই এর আধুনিক প্রযুক্তি এবং উদ্ভাবিত এমভি ধানগুলো প্রধান ভুমিকা পালন করেছে।
বিআরআরআই এর শস্য বিজ্ঞানীরা স্বাদ, পুষ্টিগুন, উৎপাদনের ক্ষমতা, রান্নার মানের উপর ভিত্তি করে নিয়মিতভাবে শস্যদানার গুনাগুন পরিক্ষা নিরীক্ষা করে থাকে। এতে করে কৃষকরা একদিকে যেমন প্রত্যাশা অনুযায়ী মান সম্পন্ন শস্য পাচ্ছে অন্যদিকে ভিন্ন ধরনের শস্যও উৎপাদিত হচ্ছে।
বর্তমানে জয়দেবপুরের সদর দফতরে এবং ৯ টি আঞ্চলিক কেন্দ্রে বিআরআরআই এর ১৩৪ জন বিজ্ঞানী এবং ৩৪৪ জন কর্মকর্তা ও কর্মচারী কাজ করছে। বিভিন্ন জাতীয় এবং আন্তর্জাতিক সংস্থার সাথে বিআরআরআই এর গবেষণা কার্যক্রম বিনিময় কর্মসূচি রয়েছে।

River Research Institute (RRI) is a national organization working as a statutory public authority under the Ministry of Water Resources, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. The Director General is the chief executive of this Institute and responsible for implementation of the decision approved by the BoG. It consists of three directorates namely, Hydraulic Research, Geotechnical Research, and Administration and Finance.
RRI has been established in view of devising plans and actions to develop water resources in a sustainable manner to meet the development needs of Bangladesh. Since its establishment RRI has been conducting multi-disciplinary and problem oriented tests, studies and researches in the field of River Hydraulics, Hydraulics of Structure and Irrigation, Coastal Hydraulics, Soil Mechanics, Material Testing & Quality Control, Sediment Technology, Hydro-chemistry & Geo-chemistry and Instrumentation. The results of such tests and researches are playing a very vital role in providing information and recommendations regarding different water resources development plans and interventions.
Physical modelling facilities are available in RRI since its establishment and recently the mathematical modelling facilities are added. Both physical and mathematical model have been proved to be very essential for sound engineering judgments to find out solutions for different water resources development projects. In view of this RRI is trying to adopt hybrid modelling approach by using physical as well as mathematical modelling to improve the understanding of different water systems which may lead to safe and less expensive solutions for engineering problems. This Institute is responsible for conducting hydrodynamic and morphological study of the river mainly to derive various design parameters of the barrage, head regulator and river training works.
The samples/specimens of soil, water, sediment and construction material samples from different projects of BWDB and other Govt. and non Govt. organizations for conducting tests as specified by the Clients. RRI has been publishing News Letter three times a year since September 1998. The description of activities of different projects and its progress, research activities, cultural activities and different types of news of RRI are included in the News Letter. The News Letter is distributed to the relevant organizations/institutes/agencies with free of cost. As a result concerned organizations/institutes/ agencies have been familiarized with the scope of works and research activities of RRI.
RRI has also been publishing journal named ‘Technical Journal’ yearly since 1991. RRI’s technical journal has already got recognition in 2000 by ISSN and its serial has been registered as ISSN 1606-9277. Multidisciplinary research activities and case studies of different projects are included in the journal. RRI has a Board of Governors (BoG) comprising nine numbers Chaired by the Honorable Minister, Ministry of Water Resources, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh which reviews and evaluates the activities of RRI and approves important proposals in order that the institute can run with all its activities properly.

গণপ্রজাতন্ত্রী বাংলাদশ সরকারের পানিসম্পদ মন্ত্রনালয়ের অধীনে একটি জাতীয় প্রতিষ্ঠান হল নদী গবেষণা ইন্সটিটিউট (আরআরআই)। একজন মহাপরিচালক এই ইন্সটিটিউটের সর্বচ্চো পদে আসীন আছেন যিনি বোর্ড অফ গভর্নরস এর অনুমোদিত সিদ্ধান্তগুলো বাস্তবায়নের দায়িত্ব পালন করেন। এই ইন্সটিটিউটের অধীনে তিনটি বিভাগ রয়েছে। এগুলো হলঃ হাইড্রলিক রিসার্চ, জিওটেকনিক্যাল রিসার্চ এবং প্রশাসন ও অর্থ।
বাংলাদেশের উন্নয়নের জন্য চাহিদা অনুযায়ী পানিসম্পদ গড়ে তোলার পরিকল্পনা এবং কার্যক্রম গ্রহনের জন্য আরআরআইকে প্রতিষ্ঠা করা হয়। প্রতিষ্ঠার পর থেকেই আরআরআই বিভিন্ন বিষয় যেমনঃ রিভার হাইড্রলিক্স, স্থাপনা এবং সেচ সংক্রান্ত হাইড্রলিক্স, কোসটাল হাইড্রলিক্স, সয়েল মেকানিকস, ম্যাটেরিয়াল টেস্টিং এন্ড কোয়ালিটি কন্ট্রোল, সেডিমেণ্ট টেকনোলজি, হাইড্র কেমিস্ট্রি এন্ড জিও কেমিস্ট্রি এন্ড ইন্সট্রুমেনশনসহ বিভিন্ন সমস্যার উপর নানা ধরনের পরীক্ষা, সমীক্ষা এবং গবেষণা পরিচালনা করছে। বিভিন্ন পানিসম্পদ উন্নয়ন সংক্রান্ত পরিকল্পনা এবং পদক্ষেপ গ্রহনের ক্ষেত্রে এসব পরীক্ষা নিরীক্ষা ও গবেষণা বিভিন্ন তথ্য এবং সুপারিশ প্রদানের মাধ্যমে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভুমিকা পালন করছে।
প্রতিষ্ঠার পর থেকেই আরআরআইতে ফিজিকাল মডেলিং এর সুবিধা রয়েছে। সম্প্রতি এখানে গানিতিক মডেলিং এর ব্যবস্থা যোগ করা হয়েছে। বিভিন্ন পানিসম্পদ উন্নয়ন সম্পর্কিত প্রকল্পে নির্ভুল বিচারের মাধ্যমে সমাধান বের করার ক্ষেত্রে ফিজিকাল মডেলিং এবং গানিতিক মডেলিং এর প্রয়োজনীয়তা উপলব্ধি করা গিয়েছে। এরই পরিপ্রেক্ষিতে বিভিন্ন পানি ব্যবস্থাপনাকে ভালভাবে বুঝে প্রকৌশল সম্পর্কিত সমস্যার নিরাপদ এবং সুলভ সমাধান অর্জনের লক্ষ্যে আরআরআই ফিজিকাল মডেলিং এবং গানিতিক মডেলিং ব্যবহারের মাধ্যমে হাইব্রিড মডেলিং এপ্রোচ প্রনয়নের চেষ্টা করে চলেছে। বাঁধ, হেড রেগুলেটর এবং বিভিন্ন প্রশিক্ষন কার্যক্রম প্রণয়নের উদ্দেশ্যে এই ইন্সটিটিউট নদীর গতিপথ এবং নদীতে প্রাণী ও উদ্ভিদের অস্তিত্বের উপর বিভিন্ন ধরনের সমীক্ষা পরিচালনা করছে।
এছাড়া আরআরআই মাটি, পানি, পলির নমুনা ছাড়াও বিডব্লিউডিবির বিভিন্ন প্রকল্প এবং অন্যান্য সরকারি ও বেসরকারি প্রতিষ্ঠান থেকে প্রাপ্ত নির্মাণ সামগ্রীর নমুনাও পরীক্ষা করে থাকে। ১৯৯৮ সালের সেপ্টেম্বর থেকে আরআরআই বছরে তিনবার নিউজ লেটার প্রকাশ করে আসছে যেখানে বিভিন্ন প্রকল্পে আরআরআই এর কার্যক্রম, গবেষণা কর্মকাণ্ড, সাংস্কৃতিক কার্যক্রম, সহ বিভিন্ন খবর প্রকাশিত হয়ে থাকে। এই নিউজ লেটারটি বিনামূল্যে বিভিন্ন সমমনা প্রতিষ্ঠানে প্রদান করা হয়ে থাকে। এর ফলে সমমনা প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলো আরআরআইএর কাজের পরিধি এবং গবেষণা কার্যক্রম সম্পর্কে অবহিত হচ্ছে।
এছাড়া ১৯৯১ সাল থেকে আরআরআই ‘টেকনিক্যাল জার্নাল’ নামে একটি জার্নাল নিয়মিত প্রকাশ করে আসছে। ২০০০ সালে এই জার্নালটি আইএসএসএন সনদ অর্জন করে এই জার্নালটিকে একটি ক্রম প্রধান করা হয় (আইএসএসএন ১৬০৬-৯২৭৭)। এই জার্নালে বিভিন্ন ক্ষেত্রে পরিচালিত গবেষণা কার্যক্রম এবং বিভিন্ন প্রকল্পের কেস স্টাডি অন্তর্ভুক্ত করা হয়ে থাকে।
আরআরআই এর রয়েছে নয় সদস্য বিশিষ্ট বোর্ড অফ গভর্নরস। গণপ্রজাতন্ত্রী বাংলাদশ সরকারের মাননীয় পানিসম্পদ মন্ত্রী বোর্ড অফ গভর্নরসের সভাপতি। বোর্ড অফ গভর্নরস আরআরআই এর কার্যক্রম পর্যালোচনা এবং মূল্যায়ন করা ছাড়াও ইন্সটিটিউটের কার্যক্রম নির্বিঘ্নে পরিচালনার উদ্দেশ্যে বিভিন্ন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ প্রস্তাবনা অনুমোদন করে থাকে।
