Firingi Bazar (ফিরিঙ্গি বাজার) is one of the most popular local markets in Munshiganj District. This bazar has a historical importance as well. There is a story behind the naming of this place.
In ancient Bengal, Munshiganj was familiar as a place desperately being robbed and hijacked by Portuguese & Mogh Pirates. Those Portuguese and Mogh Pirates were named as ‘Firingi’.By using water ways, like sea and river they used to do that.
Contemporary emperor of ancient Bengal was frequently disturbed and disappointed by their destructive activities. They were looking for a immediate remedy of that disturbance. For that reason they built a massive ‘Idrakpur’ water fort.
Recurrent attack from Firingis and the protection by Mughol water fort was taking place simultaneously. Threat from Arakan’s king accelerated a peace agreement between Firingi and Hossen Beg (হোসেন বেগ). According to the conditions of agreement in 1666 Hossen Beg was complied to rehabilitate those Firingis entered into that region at the bank of river Dhaleshwari in Munshiganj. That was the reason to named after the place as Firingi Bazar.
It’s very easy to reach at Firingi Bazar from Munshiganj Sadar and If somebody riding on a Dhaka-Munshiganj Bus, then it would be wise to step off after crossing Muktarpur bridge on the way to Munshganj. From there, Firingi Bazar is just five minutes away on foot.
There are several transport is available from Dhaka to Munshiganj. The bus services are “Nayan Paribahan”, “Dighir par Paribahan” and “Dhaka Transport”, all of the buses used to start from “Gulistan” of Dhaka. It will cost you 60-80 taka, and will require 1 hrs to 2 hrs bus journey depending upon the road traffic.
Also you can hire CNG auto rickshaw from the “Postogola”, and it will take you 250-350 to take you at Muktarpur bridge. Remember, if you are hiring CNG, make sure who will provide the toll of the bridge. For you information, the toll fee is 20 taka. So negotiate with the driver of CNG about who will provide the toll.
Though the district is just beside the Dhaka, still its hard to find a suitable hotel from the district. The main reason, may be people from dhaka used to come this place for a single day trip. But anyway, if you need to stay at Munshiganj town, that case I’ll suggest you to stay at “Hotel Comfort” this one is the best from the town. Also you there is another one which is “Hotel three star international”. But the quality of the rooms of this hotel is not that much good. For both cases, it will take 100-700 taka per night depending upon the room.
