Brief

Bardhan Kuthi (বর্ধন কুঠি) is one of the historical places of Gaibandha district. It is situated near the Gobindaganj Upazila of Gaibandha. During the reign of British East-India company Raja Harinath (রাজা হরিনাথ) ruled the Bardhan Kuthi. During the separation of Indian subcontinent the last Ruler of Bardhan kuthi Raja Shoilesh Chandra (রাজা শৈলেশ চন্দ্র) Migrated to India from Bangladesh.

Due to the establishment of Gobindaganj college in this place, We can only observe the relics of Bardhan Kuthi. But it demands more research and discussion, By which we can discover the continuation of distinguish dynasty in Bardhan Kuthi. We may also reveal the valuable information of contemporary Zamindar’s and their lifestyle as well.

How to go

If you want to reach Bardhan Kuthi, first you have to go Gobindaganj Upazila. After reaching there just take a Auto Rickshaw or Rickshaw to go Bardhan Kuthi.

This is locally named as "Shaha Bari", built by someone rich merchant. The owner of the house left the house during the war 1971 with Pakistan. Before leaving the country, he somehow able to sell his properties.

After a few minutes of walking distance from the "Shaha Bari", there is another old house, and this one is much larger. Actually this is the mansion of the local Zamindar of here. This house is currently occupied by the local "Land Survey" section of Madaripur. 4/5 government employees used to work here. Also the old house is using by the families of these employees. From my observation, this building is not that much older compare to other Palaces from Bangladesh. But still this place is worth to visit.

Initially the people from there was apathetic to help me, and was curious about my presence here. But after a short talking with them, they started to provide information about this house. And one of the employee guided me to visit the whole Mansion.

‘শাহাবাড়ি’ নামে স্থানীয়দের কাছে পরিচিত কোন এক ধনী বনিক এই জমিদারবাড়িটি নির্মাণ করেছিলেন। বাড়িটির মালিক ১৯৭১ সালের মুক্তিযুদ্ধের সময় বাড়ি ছেড়ে চলে যান এবং দেশত্যাগের পূর্বে জমিদারবাড়িটি বিক্রি করতে সমর্থ হন।

শাহাবাড়ি থেকে কয়েক মিনিট হাঁটলে আরেকটি বড় প্রাচীন বাড়ি আপনার চোখে পরবে যেটি স্থানীয় জমিদারেরা ব্যবহার করতেন। বর্তমানে মাদারীপুরের ভূমি জরিপের কাজে নিয়োজিত চার থেকে পাঁচজন সরকারি কর্মচারী সপরিবারে এই ভবনে বসবাস করছে। এই বাড়িটিকে বাংলাদেশের অন্যান্য জমিদারবাড়ির চাইতে পুরাতন মনে হয় না।

এখানকার স্থানীয় মানুষেরা আপনার উপস্থিতিতে প্রথমদিকে বেশ কৌতূহল বোধ করলেও তাদের সাথে কিছুক্ষন কথা বলার পর আপনাকে এই ভবনের ইতিহাস সম্পর্কে অবহিত করবে। এখানে বসবাস করা কর্মচারীরা আপনাকে পুরো ভবনটি ঘুরিয়ে দেখাতে পারে।

In different location of Narsingdi district there are a number of Archaeological sites which attract traveler and explorer to visit these places recurrently. Balapur Zamindar House (বালাপুর জমিদার বাড়ি) is one of the old palatial buildings in this district. If someone interested to visit the oldest buried civilization area in Bangladesh named as Wari-Bateshwar, then it would be better to take a glance at Balapur Zamindar House while moving there. It’s situated at Balapur village, Madhabdi Upazila of Narsingdi district.

This Zamindar House was built by local Zamindar named 'Nobin Chandra Saha' in 1906. It is also known as Zamindar Kali Babur Bari (কালী বাবুর বাড়ি). It’s a complex of buildings scattered in a particular zone. Basically, most of the buildings are three storied and some are one or two storied. Dept. of Archaeology in Bangladesh doesn’t announced it as a protected site yet. So like many others old houses in Bangladesh it is on the way of ruining.

No matter how decorative and ornamented this house is, it’s almost abandoned and some people who living in this house are so called ancestor of Zamindari estate at Balapur. Some local people are selling all the floor tiles made by white stone desperately.

But, Still today this beautiful palace standing with its own identity and spreading the essence of colonial palatial architecture in Bengal. If proper steps being taken this structure can be preserved & conserved for the future exhibiotion.

Ancient Harisachandra pat or Rajbari is located at Khutamara union in Jaldhaka Upazila of Nilphamari district. It is situated south side the river Charal Kata. Now it all ruins. There is an Elevation. On the Elevation are 5 black stone. People says that of that area those stone some time Sink and Arm in the soil. Many people says that it is a grave or building of the king. Beside this Elevation there are more two Elevation. In the north side of this pat or Rajbari there has two pond name Duyo-Suyo. Which carry the memory of two princes Anuda and Padun.

Hemnagar Zamindar Bari (হেমনগর জমিদার বাড়ি) is a less highlighted edifice from Bangladesh. Not that much tourists use to travel here despite of having everything to become a promising tourist attraction from Bangladesh. Only local people from around use to visit here. It was built by the prominent Hindu Zamindar (জমিদার) from Tangail (টাংগাঈল) district named Hemchandra Choudhury (হেমচন্দ্র চৌধুরী) at 1890.

The Main building at the front side has two small statues of angel at the top. That's why local people know this as Porir Dalan (পরীর দালান) which means a Palace of Angel. Main building of this Zamindar Bari (জমিদার বাড়ি) is currently using as an administrative building of Hemnagar (হেমনগর) Degree College, but the other buildings at the back side is empty right now. There it has approximately 25 rooms inside.

Front side of the building is having the best styles from the whole premise. It is highly ornate at the walls using colorful glasses. Every inches of the walls, pillars, and the archways are flourished with flowers, vines, stars, etc formed using those colorful glasses.

The Zamindar (জমিদার) was slight cruel and rude on the peasants. They were coerced to follow few rules. For example, if anyone wanted to pass this palace premise, he/she must had to continuously keep vowing and walking backwards with bare feet. Such things must have poured the heart of locals with hatred and grief. That's why the powerful Zamindar (জমিদার) had to escape from the place during the country's separation. Along with the buildings, the whole premise was having 7 massive ponds (only few are right now available). Local people say those 7 ponds are for the seven ladies (daughters and sisters of the Zamindar). Dhonbari Zamindar Bari is very near from this place.

বাংলাদেশের অন্যতম আকর্ষণীয় পর্যটনস্পটে পরিনত হওয়ার সকল যোগ্যতা থাকার পরও হেমনগর জমিদার বাড়ি খুব একটা সুনাম অর্জন করতে পারেনি এবং খুব বেশি পর্যটকও এখানে আসেন না। মূলত এখানকার আশেপাশে স্থানীয় বসবাসকারীরা এখানে আসেন। ১৮৯০ সালে টাঙ্গাইলের বিশিষ্ট হিন্দু জমিদার হেমচন্দ্র চৌধুরী এই জমিদারবাড়িটি নির্মাণ করেন।

জমিদারবাড়ির মূল ভবনের সামনে দুটি পরীর ছোট মূর্তি রয়েছে আর এ কারনেই স্থানীয়রা এই জমিদারবাড়িকে বলে থাকে পরীর দালান। এই জমিদারবাড়ির মূল ভবনটি বর্তমানে হেমনগর ডিগ্রী কলেজের প্রশাসনিক ভবন হিসেবে ব্যবহার করা হচ্ছে তবে এখানকার পেছনদিকে অবস্থিত ভবনটি বর্তমানে খালি পড়ে আছে। জমিদারবাড়ির অভ্যন্তরে প্রায় ২৫টি কক্ষ আছে।

জমিদারবাড়ির সামনের দিকটি সবচেয়ে দৃষ্টি নন্দন। রঙ্গিন কাচ দিয়ে ভবনের দেয়ালে নকশা করা হয়েছে। জমিদারবাড়ির দেয়াল, পিলার, ফটকের প্রতিটি ইঞ্চিতে রঙ্গিন কাঁচ ব্যবহার করে ফুল, তারা, গাছ ইত্যাদি সৃষ্টি করা হয়েছে।

জমিদার তার এলাকার মানুষকে কঠোর হাতে শাসন করতেন এবং তাঁদের কিছু নিয়ম মানতে বাধ্য করা হত যেমনঃ কাউকে জমিদারবাড়ির মধ্যে দিয়ে অতিক্রম করতে হলে তাঁকে খালি পায়ে ক্রমাগত মাথা ঝুঁকিয়ে আনুগত্য প্রকাশের পাশাপাশি উল্টো হয়ে হাটতে হত এবং এ কারনে স্থানীয়দের মনে জমিদারের উপর চরম ক্ষোভ ও ঘৃণার সৃষ্টি হয়। এই ঘৃণা এবং অসন্তোষের পরিপ্রেক্ষিতে জমিদার দেশবিভাগের সময় জমিদারবাড়ি থেকে পালিয়ে যান। মূল জমিদারবাড়ির পাশাপাশি এখানে সাতটি বিশালাকারের পুকুর ছিল যেগুলোর মধ্যে মাত্র কয়েকটি বর্তমানে টিকে রয়েছে। স্থানীয়রা বলে থাকে যে সাতটি পুকুর ছিল জমিদারের সাত ছেলে মেয়ের জন্য। ধনবাড়ি জমিদারবাড়ি এখান থেকে বেশ নিকটে অবস্থিত।
