Brief

Chera Dwip is elevated at about 3.6 meter above the sea level and populated by about 4,000 inhabitants the 7.315 kilometer long island is almost flat consisting of alluvial sands mixed with shells of mollusks. In addition to the main island, there are a number of tiny islets locally known as ‘Chera dwip’, which means separated island. Visitors will miss something great if they don’t glimpse at a shallow lagoon in the northern part of the island which gets connected to the sea during high tide by a narrow channel on the western coast.

Researchers have recorded 182 species of wildlife of which 4 species are amphibians, 130 birds, 20 mammals, and a fossilized coral—33,238 years old—on this very island we can boast about. A huge number of migrated birds come to this island in winter season enhancing its beauty and holy ambiance.

Tourists can book their trip either from Chittagong or from Cox’s Bazar. The surrounding coral reef of the St Martin island has an extension named CheraDwip. A small bush is there, which is the only green part of CheraDwip, enhancing the beauty of this island. People do not live on this part of the island, so it is advisable for the tourists to go there early and come back by afternoon

মনপুরা দ্বীপের রয়েছে ঐতিহাসিক প্রেক্ষাপট। ৬০০ বছর পূর্বে পর্তুগীজ দস্যুরা এই দ্বীপে আশ্রয় নিত।পর্তুগীজদের প্রস্থানের পর ভোলা, লক্ষ্মীপুর এবং নোয়াখালী থেকে মানুষজন এই দ্বীপে এসে বাস করতে শুরু করে। বাংলাদেশের দক্ষিনে অবস্থিত এই দ্বীপটির আয়তন ৩৭৩.১৯ কিলোমিটার এবং জনসংখ্যা প্রায় ৫০ হাজার। প্রাকৃতিক সৌন্দর্যতে ভরপুর এই দ্বীপটির অবস্থান একটু দুর্গম হলেও আপনি যদি প্রাকৃতিক সৌন্দর্যের ভিন্ন রূপ দেখতে এবং তাঁর স্বাদ নিতে চান তবে এই দ্বীপে বেড়াতে আসতে পারেন।

Shah of Shahpori Island stands for Muhammad Azam Shah alias Shah Suja, a son of Aurangzeb, the last Mogul Emperor of India, and Pori stands for Pori Begum, wife of Bahadur Shah alias Shah Badar, another son of Aurangzeb. In a war back in 1689 sons of Aurangzeb were defeated by the forces of Burmese King Sudurma. Bahadur Shah was killed in the battle. Arrested by the Burmese forces a few surviving members of Mogul army including Azam Shah and Pori Banu (wife of the deceased Bahadur Shah) were ordered to board a country boat with all their hands tied from behind.

Having been towed to the mouth of the Naaf River (previously Busitang River) the boat was scuttled by making holes in its bottom drowning all the captives. Azam Shah and Pori Banu who survived miraculously took shelter in this very island which at that ancient time was known as Kuanka Island. After the names of Aurangzeb’s surviving son and daughter-in-law the Kuanka Island later became popular as Shahpori Island. Shahpori Island, though still called as an island, was in fact turned into a peninsula in early 60s by artificial siltation through cross-damming.

শাহপরী দ্বীপের ‘শাহ’ নামটি এসেছে ভারতবর্ষের সর্বশেষ মুঘল সম্রাট আওরঙ্গজেবের পুত্র মুহাম্মদ আজম শাহ ওরফে শাহ সুজার নাম থেকে এবং ‘পরী’ নামটি এসেছে আওরঙ্গজেবের অপর পুত্র বাহাদুর শাহ ওরফে শাহ বদরের স্ত্রী পরী বেগমের নাম থেকে। ১৮৬৯ সালে সংঘটিত এক যুদ্ধে আওরঙ্গজেবের পুত্ররা বার্মিজ রাজা সুদুরমার কাছে পরাজিত হয় এবং সেই যুদ্ধে বাহাদুর শাহ নিহত হন। আজম শাহ এবং পরী বানুসহ মুঘল সেনাবাহিনীর কিছু বেঁচে যাওয়া সদস্যদের হাত পেছনে বেধে নৌকায় করে নাফ নদীতে (তৎকালীন বুসিটাং নদী) ছেড়ে দেওয়া হয়। সেসময় নৌকায় ফুটো করে দেওয়াতে নৌকাটি ডুবে যায় এবং সেইসাথে নৌকার সকল আরোহী পানিতে ডুবে যায়। তবে আজম শাহ এবং পরী বানু সৌভাগ্যক্রমে বেঁচে যান এবং এই দ্বীপে (সেসময় এই দ্বীপের নাম ছিল কুয়ানকা দ্বীপ) আশ্রয় গ্রহন করেন। পরবর্তীতে আওরঙ্গজেবের পুত্র এবং পুত্রবধুর নামানুসারে এই দ্বীপের নাম হয় শাহপরীর দ্বীপ। শাহপরীর দ্বীপকে ষাটের দশকে বাঁধ নির্মাণের মাধ্যমে উপত্যকায় পরিণত করা হলেও এটিকে এখনও দ্বীপ বলা হয়ে থাকে।

Legend has it that in the early part of the seventh century an Arabian merchant ship fully loaded with cinnamons was hit hard by a huge submarine rock near an atoll during a foul weather and was broken asunder scattering cinnamon sticks all over the island, thus giving birth to the name of “Daruchinir Deep” meaning the Island of Cinnamons. But local people used to call this landmass Narikel Jinjira, which means the Island of Coconuts, as the island was once fringed with dense groves of coconut palms. During cadastral survey of India in the early part of the last century surveying authority named this coral island as Saint Martin’s Island probably after the name of a British saint.

More than 3000 people arrive at the Saint Martin Island every morning and leave the island the same day by 3 in the afternoon to splurge the daytime to soak up sun-rays and hang around in solitary seclusion on the sea beach surrounded by corals and clear blue water of the sea. Panoramic beauty and the feelings of being amidst pristine marine life attracts many of the visitors to stay there overnight to enjoy sensing and sighting the beauties of darkness with no electric lights around blurring vision. Laying back on a beach chair, gazing at the nocturnal sky studded with a dazzling moon or billions of gorgeous stars, listening to undulating sonic sounds of sea waves, and reflecting on the mysteries of creations, when time is on your side, is an experience that needs to be felt only, not described.

বাংলাদেশের একমাত্র প্রবাল দ্বীপ অপরূপ সুন্দর সেন্ট মার্টিন’স এ আপনি জীবন্ত প্রবাল দেখতে পাবেন। টেকনাফ থেকে মাত্র ৩০ কিলোমিটার দূরে অবস্থিত এই দ্বীপটিতে আপনি স্থানীয় মোটর বোট, টুরিস্ট বোট অথবা সি ট্রাকে করে যেতে পারবেন।

কথায় আছে যে সাত শতকের প্রথম ভাগে প্রতিকুল আবহাওয়ার মধ্যে এখানে দারুচিনি বোঝাই আরবের একটি বাণিজ্যিক জাহাজ পানির নীচে থাকা একটি বিশাল পাথরের সঙ্গে ধাক্কা খেয়ে ভেঙ্গে পড়ে। এতে করে জাহাজে থাকা দারুচিনি এই দ্বীপের সবখানে ছড়িয়ে যায় এবং এরই পরিপ্রেক্ষিতে সেন্ট মারটিন’স দ্বীপের নাম হয়ে যায় ‘দারুচিনির দ্বীপ’। তবে একসময় এই দ্বীপে নারিকেলের ঘন বাগান থাকায় স্থানীয়রা সেন্ট মারটিন’স দ্বীপকে নারিকেল জিঞ্জিরা (যার অর্থ নারিকেলের দ্বীপ) নামেও বলে থাকতো। বিগত শতকের প্রথমভাগে ক্যাডাসট্রাল জরিপ চলাকালে জরিপকারি কতৃপক্ষ সম্ভবত একজন ব্রিটিশ সাধকের নামানুসারে এই প্রবাল দ্বীপটির নামকরণ করে সেন্ট মারটিন’স দ্বীপ।

পর্যটন মৌসুমে প্রতিদিন তিন হাজারের অধিক পর্যটক প্রতিদিন সকালে সেন্ট মারটিন’স দ্বীপে আসেন প্রবাল দ্বারা পরিবেষ্টিত পরিষ্কার নীল পানি সমেত সৈকতের সৌন্দর্য একান্তে উপভোগ করতে এবং তারা বিকাল ৩টার মধ্যে এই দ্বীপটি ত্যাগ করেন। নজরকাড়া প্রাকৃতিক সৌন্দর্য এবং প্রকৃত সামুদ্রিক আবহের মধ্যে রাতের অন্ধকারের (এখানে বৈদ্যুতিক বাতি নেই) সৌন্দর্যকে উপভোগ করতে অনেক পর্যটক এখানে রাত্রিযাপনও করে থাকেন। বীচ চেয়ারে শরীরটাকে এলিয়ে দিয়ে মায়াবী চাঁদ অথবা লক্ষ্ লক্ষ তারা খচিত রাতের আকাশ দর্শন করা এবং সেই সাথে সমুদ্রের ঢেউয়ের গর্জনকে উপভোগ করার পাশাপাশি সৃষ্টির রহস্য নিয়ে চিন্তা করার অনন্য অভিজ্ঞতা কোন ভাবেই বর্ণনীয় নয় তবে এই অভিজ্ঞতা এখানে না আসলে আপনি কখনোই অর্জন করতে পারবেন না।
