Brief

There are some few islands in the Mighty River Meghna. Locally these islands are called “Char” (চর). From Narsingdi to Chandpur, several chars are seen in the Meghna.

In Narayanganj-Munshiganj area (Sonargaon-Gozaria) there is seen three different islands. Locally they are named Char Balaki (বালাকি), Saydabad (সায়দাবাদ) or Gucchogram (গুচ্ছগ্রাম) and Nuner Tek (নুনের টেক). In Bangla, “tek” means some place isolated by water. Lalpuri Dorbar Sharif Complex is situated at Nuner Tek.

Lalpuri Shah was a preacher of Islam. When he came in this land no one can say exactly. People believe that the man had spiritual power to cure problems or illness. His actual date of demise is still unknown. Followers of him made a dorgah beside his tomb. Recently by the donation of people, a mosque with a tall minaret has made.

The island is isolated. Trawlers commute on scheduled time only on day time. But anyone can visit the place if he is willing to visit sonargaon. Trawlers go there in half an hour interval so anyone can go and after spending 30 minutes can return with the next trawler.

How to go

From Mograpara Bus stop of Sonargaon you have to ride on a CNG or auto rickshaw moving toward Anando Bazar. It will cost around 20 Tk. At Anando Bazar river ghat you will have to find a trawler moving toward Nunertek. It will cost around 10 Tk to ride on. It is to inform that after the evening time there is any boat or trawler moving toward Nunertek. So, If any traveler wants to go there then it would better to move on before time.

Frequent bus services to Sonargaon operate from Gulistan, Saidabad and other bus stands in Dhaka. Tickets may be bought on roadside counters. The price of the ticket from Gulistan bus stand is around 35 BDT, and the ride may take about 40 minutes, depending on the unpredictable traffic. Mention your destination as Mograpara. You can reach that place using bus from Dhaka (Gulistan). This will take you around 1 hour to reach at the place. You have to get down from the bus at Mograpara Crossing.From the crossing, you have to take a rickshaw, and have to tell the puller to drop you at Sonargaon. This will require 20 taka for the lift.

Aggmeda Khyang Monastery, a magnificent Buddhist monastery, is visited by thousands of Buddhists from the surrounding areas. It consists of a prayer chambers, assembly hall, Buddha images and manuscripts. The main chamber is supported by timber columns. The Aggmeda Khyang Monastery is located by the entrance to the town. The majority of the Buddha images originate from Burma. Aggmeda Khyang Monastery is at the bottom of a hill and is nestled in between trees.

Aggmeda Khyang Monastery is a beautiful place in Cox’s Bazar. It is a large Buddhist Monastery, and a place revered by around 400,000 Buddhist people of Cox’s Bazar and the Chittagong Hill Tracts. Equally lucubrate in plan, elevation and decoration is the Aggameda Khyang near the entrance to the Cox’s Bazar town, which nestles at the foot of a hill under heavy cover of a stand of large trees.

The chief sanctuary-cum-monastery is carried on a series of round timber columns, which apart from accommodating the prayer chamber and an assembly hall, also is the repository of a large of small bronze Buddha images-mostly of Burmese origin– and some old manuscripts. Beyond the main khyang to the south, there is an promoted wooden pavilion and a smaller brick temple with a timber and corrugated metal root. Apart from bearing an inscription in Burmese over its entrance, the temple contains some large stucco and bronze Buddha images.

অপূর্ব সুন্দর বৌদ্ধ বিহার আগহমেদা খিয়াং এ আশেপাশের এলাকা থেকে প্রচুর বৌদ্ধ ধর্মের মানুষেরা এসে থাকেন। এখানে রয়েছে একটি প্রার্থনা কক্ষ, জমায়েত হওয়ার কক্ষ, বৌদ্ধ মূর্তি এবং পাণ্ডূলিপি। বিহারের মূল কক্ষটি বাঁশের উপর ভর করে দাঁড়িয়ে আছে। শহরের প্রবেশমুখেই আগহমেদা খিয়াং অবস্থিত। এখানে অবস্থিত বেশীরভাগ বুদ্ধের প্রতিকৃতি বার্মা থেকে আনা হয়েছে। এই খিয়াংটি পাহাড়ের পাদদেশে গাছগাছালির মধ্যে অবস্থিত।

Chad Gazi Bhuya Mosque, also known as Chad Kha Mosque, is an archaic mosque from the Feni district that was built during 1112 Hijri (Arabic Calendar). According to the inscription at the front door, the mosque was built by someone named Chad Gazi Bhuya. It’s a traditional three domed mosque, domes are in a single row. Center one is larger compared to the others. All the three domes are having a Lotus at the top and two Kolosh (native water pot). This looks delicately beautiful and adds an extraordinary beauty to the mosque.

Apart from the domes, the mosque has 12 minarets over the walls in a symmetric way. Four minarets at the four corners are having similar style and other 8 minarets amid the walls are also having similar style. Eastern side of the wall is having simple terracotta along with the terracotta above the front door.

The Joy kali Temple of Dhaka, is situated in a place between Thathari (ঠাটারি) Bazar and Wari. The road was named after this temple itself. Now, literally it is 24 Joy Kali Temple street. Joy Kali Temple is a Hindu temple devoted to Goddess Kali Ma for worshipping. People of Hindu religion of every age come to this temple to worship Goddess Kali. The statue of Goddess Kali is of great significance to the Hindus. The visitors and committee members of this temple gather money for occasions, where sweets are later distributed among them which is called 'Prasad'.

History:

This temple is about 400 years old, established in the Bengali year 1001. During the reign of the Nawabs, Dewan of Nawabs Tulsi Narayan Ghosh and Nabh Narayan Ghosh established this temple with the inspection of Bancharam Saint. At that time they established twenty-one statues of Shiva, Kali, Lakshmi narayan, three Shalgram Chakra, Bandurga etc. A few beautiful monuments like Pancharatna, Nabratna, temple of Shiva, guest house, were built in the house of Joy Kali. Even market named Nawabpur Joy Kali bazar, and a market situated at the south of Kaliganj hut was dedicated to Joy Kali Devi.

Present condition:

The first caretaker of this Joy Kali Devi was Bancharam Saint, the third caretaker was Panachenand, who suffered a decline, so the responsibility to serve the Devi got into the hands of Bhraman Tanyar. Later the landlords of that time seized some of the land of this temple. Starting from that time the temple started to erode, due to lack of maintenance and shortage of money. This temple was damaged during the strike of 1990’s. The temple was renovated later on by Goddess Kali’s followers. Now the temple is much smaller than it was when it was first established. The temple was burgled and valuables looted by thieves in 2010.

Architectural significance:

Inside the boundary of this temple there is basically two temples. One of the temples is of Kali Devi, the other one, which has a dome, is of Shiv. The dome was made out of plaster and is visible from outside. Locals of that area refer to this dome as the Joy Kali Temple. The front of the temple complex is a busy stop for human haulers that go into old Dhaka. The temple has tiles on the walls all around, and the floor is made out of mosaic. There are pictures of Hindu Gods and Goddesses printed on the tiled walls of the temple. The entrance to the temple is welcomed by a logo made of stainless steel saying 'Om'- which is a Hindu divine symbol. In front of the Kali Devi statue is a bell hanging from above, it is a ritual to ring the bell after entering the temple and before leaving.

Sri Sri Anondomoyi Kalibari (শ্রী শ্রী আনন্দময়ী কালীবাড়ি) temple is a Sacred place for Hindu Religious people. It’s located at Shahid Rafique Sarak of Manikganj Sadar Upazila very near to the Manikganj Bazar Bus Stop.

It is assumed that it was built near about fifty years ago and then being renovated in several times. At the time when Offroad Bangladesh team explored there, we observed the whole premise was occupied by several shops usually being showed up in traditional Bangladeshi fair.

A significant number of snack shop was selling traditional snacks. There was also a clay crafts shop which have had a colorful collections of clay made show pieces.
