Brief

Raja Viratnagar (রাজা বিরাটনগর) palace is the most valuable historical place of Gaibandha. Raja Virat and Panchopandob (পঞ্চপাণ্ডব) whose name are seen in the play Mahabharat. In 1960, Major Sherwill mentioned this as a “Brad Rajar Ghar”. Once upon a time, there was a huge fort in this place.

Great historian Rakhaldas Bondopaddhay (রাখালদাস বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়) published a report in 1925-26 where he mentioned five bronze sculptures and 4-5 mound which were discovered in during the year 1910. Raja Virat had a huge barns (গোশালা) and about 60000 cows were about. The two younger brother of Panchapandob, namely Nakul (নকুল) and Shodeb (সহদেব), had the responsibility to take care of that barns. For that reason, the word Gaibandha came from the word barns.

How to go

First you have to go to Gobindaganj and then hire a CNG for going to Shorgachi. Finally you can hire a van or rickshaw to reach the Biratnagar.

Dhaka and Gaibandha is linked by road. You can take a bus from Dhaka to reach Gaibandha district. Some of the bus services have been listed below for your assistance.

There are two cannons of Mughal period in front of the Border Guard Bangladesh office gate at Kurigram. Those cannons were at Panga Zamindar Bari. From there, the two cannons replace here.

Nirmai Shibbari was built nearly 500 years ago. Many believe that there were Kuki tribes in this area. The Kuki government frequently did not obey the command of the ruling Tripura government. For controlling mutineers, the King of Tripura sent a group of troops. King’s son led the battle. The Tripura King won the battle but lost his son in law.

This Zamindar Bari (জমিদার বাড়ী) is currently known as Manob Babur Bari (মানব বাবুর বাড়ী) as the current owner's name is Manab Babu (মানব বাবু) who is the last descendent of the Gangatia Zamindar (গাংগাটিয়া জমিদার). Manob Babu (মানব বাবু) has fisheries project near from his house. You can also visit the project with its owner if he is available.

According to the Manob Babu (মানব বাবু), they are the possible smallest Zamindar (জমিদার) from the Bangladesh. Their forefathers came here from India, a Brahmin family (very strictly following Brahmin). During the war of 1971, the Pakistani armies and their Bangladeshi allies have done lot of damage to their house. Right now he is living there with his wife and sister. Neither he nor his brothers (all his brothers are passed away) have any children.

Gangatia Zamindar Bari (গাংগাটিয়া জমিদার বাড়ী) is mainly a small house that is having an array of Roman styled columns at the front. The architecture and the style of the building from the front side is amazingly beautiful. Very few travelers use to visit here. This Zamindar Bari (জমিদার বাড়ী) is a small one, but it has a massive boundary. The front door is also decorated and stylish. (গাংগাটিয়া জমিদার বাড়ী).

গাংগাটিয়ার জমিদারের সর্বশেষ বংশধর মানব বাবু বসবাস করার কারনে বর্তমানে এই জমিদার বাড়িটি মানব বাবুর বাড়ি নামে পরিচিত। জমিদার বাড়ির কাছেই মানব বাবু মাছ চাষ করেন। আপনি চাইলে তার সাথেই মাছের খামার ঘুরে দেখতে পারবেন।

মানব বাবুর ভাষ্যমতে তারা হলেন এদেশের সবচেয়ে ছোট জমিদার পরিবার। তারা হলেন ব্রাহ্মণ গোত্রের এবং তাঁদের পূর্বসূরীরা এখানে ভারত থেকে এসেছিল। ১৯৭১ সালের মুক্তিযুদ্ধের সময় পাকিস্তানী হানাদার বাহিনী ও তাদের এদেশীয় দোসররা জমিদার বাড়িটির ব্যপক ক্ষতিসাধন করে। বর্তমানে মানব বাবু এখানে তার স্ত্রী ও বোনকে নিয়ে বাস করছেন। মানব বাবু এবং তাঁর পরলোকগত কোন ভাইয়েরই কোন সন্তান নেই।

গাংগাটিয়া জমিদার বাড়ির সম্মুখভাগে রোমান স্থাপত্যের কলাম রয়েছে। সামনে থেকে এই জমিদার বাড়িটির স্থাপত্যশৈলী এক কথায় অসাধারণ। এখানে খুব কম পর্যটক বেড়াতে আসেন। ছোট এই জমিদার বাড়িটি বিশাল এলাকার উপর অবস্থিত। জমিদার বাড়ির সম্মুখ দরজাটি নকশায় পরিপূর্ণ।

বাংলাদেশের বেশীরভাগ হিন্দু জমিদার বাড়ি বেশ নাজুক অবস্থায় রয়েছে। বেশীরভাগ হিন্দু জমিদার ধর্মীয় অস্থিরতা এবং অন্যান্য প্রতিকুল পরিস্থিতির কারনে এদেশ ত্যাগ করতে বাধ্য হন। তবে, স্থানীয়দের বন্ধুত্বসুলভ আচরণ এবং সার্বিক সহযোগিতায় এখনও কিছু হিন্দু জমিদার পরিবার গর্বের সাথে বসবাস করছে।

Alexander Castle is one of the most amazing and renowned structure in Mymensingh District. It was built by Maharaja Suryo Kanta Acharya Chowdhury(মহারাজ সুর্যকান্ত আচার্য চৌধুরী) in 1879 in the memory of the 1st zilla magistrate of Mymensingh Mr. N .S Alexander at the time of Jubili festival. It covers an area of 27.155 acres.

It is a nice small archaic building having two Greek statue at both sides of the front gate. Though the arms of those statues are currently broken, but still those looks great. The whole building is placed over a high plinth, probably to avoid the flood from the nearness river.

It cost 45000 taka at that time. Alexander Castle is a two storied building made by metals and woods in a high concrete base. This building was used as a rest house for the guests of Maharaja Maharaja Soshi Kanta Acharya Chowdhury. Many great personalities of the world stayed at this castle when visiting Mymensingh city. Nobel Laureate poet Rabindranath Tagore arrived in Mymensingh around the midday of 15 February 1926. He stayed in the Alexander Castle as a guest for 4days. Mahatma Gandhi also stayed in this castle in 1926.

Lord carzon, Chittaranjan Das, Nawab Sir Salimullah, Kamal Pasha also visited Alexander Castle. This house was decorated by royal furnitures and items at that time. There is a big field in front of this house. You can see two fascinating silver statue which makes the place more beautiful. There is also a big garden and a pond still remains behind the castle. It is said that Maharaja used to keep big cats in his garden so he surrounded the garden with big still cages.At present this house is being used as library of teachers training college(male) in Mymensingh.
