Brief

The Museum of Independence in Dhaka depicts the struggle for independence of Bangladesh. It shows the history of the nation since Mughal tenure to independence in 1971. It is the first and only underground museum in the country. The museum is part of a 67 acre complex at Suhrawardy Udyan, the site from where Sheikh Mujibur Rahman gave his historic speech declaring the struggle for independence, and where the Pakistani forces surrendered after the War of Liberation. The museum was opened to public on 25th March 2015, the 45th Independence Day of Bangladesh.

How to go

You can come to see this Museum from different locations of Dhaka City. There are so many buses moving towards Shahbagh. Sohrawardi Uddyan is very near to Shahbagh Bus stop. This museum is few kilometers away from Shahbagh.

He is popular among the people for his famous novel Bishad Sindhu (বিষাদ সিন্ধু). It is a novel based on the tragic death of the grandchildren of Holy Prophet Mohammad. The incidents behind "Ashura" is being well written in here. He is considered as the first novelist to emerge from the Muslim society of Bengal. He was born and brought up at Lahinipara in Kushtia District. Though he was born in the village of Lahinipara (লাহিনিপাড়া) in Kumarkhali (কুমারখালী), Kushtia in 1847, but after that he spent most of his life in Padamdi in Baliakandi Upazila under Rajbari District. He was born in a Muslim aristocrat family. The original house at Kumarkhali being demolished almost 130 years ago. In the year 2008, government established an auditorium in that place along with a primary school. That place is used as a museum too, which is named as Mir Mosharrof Hossain Memorial Museum. Inside the Museum, visitors may not discover a significant number of collections. But, a few collections will make the visitor remember the lifestyle of this great novelist. There are only some agricultural tools, chairs, glasses and some armors used by Mir Mosharraf Hossain is being displayed for the visitors. There are some rare and historical photographs too. Mir Mosharraf Hossain died in 1912 in Padamdi. In 1999, Government of People's Republic of Bangladesh decided to build a memorial complex in his family graveyard in Padamdi, Rajbari. Which make the traveler confused as two of these structures are almost in similar pattern concentrating on the memories. Our National poet Kazi Nazrul Islam was born in Churulia of Burdwan(বর্ধমান) district, West Bengal on May 25, 1899. He spent a year of his boyhood in Kazir Shimla (কাজীর শিমলা) and Darirampur (দরিরামপুর) in Trishal, Mymensingh. He studied at Darirampur High School when he was in Class Seven and lodged at the house of Bechutia Bepari (বিচুতিয়া বেপারী) at Namapara, as his school was far from Kazir Shimla. In that regard, Namapara is given more importance than Kazir Shimla, say locals. Later, Kazi Rafizullah, a sub-inspector of police, took Nazrul to his village home at Kazir Shimla in 1914.

Nazrul memorabilia is symbolized by two Smriti Kendro (স্মৃতি কেন্দ্র) (Nazrul Memorial Center) in villages Kazir Shimla and Namapara, of Darirampur, Trishal draw the attention of visitors far and wide.

Nazrul memorabilia housed at the two center owns gramophones and records (released by His Masters Voice Company); manuscripts in Bengali, English, Hindi and Urdu and some rare black and white photographs of the poet. The memorabilia can be seen on the second floor of the center. The memorial centres also house a library with books authored by Nazrul and literary works on Nazrul by other writers.

Though the memorabilia collection is meagre, visitors flock enthusiastically to have a view. As every year, there has been a rush of visitors to the two Nazrul Smriti Kendra (memorial centres) at Kazir Shimla village and Darirampur in Trishal just ahead of the birth anniversary of the National Poet.

After the migration of Jogunath Babu, a piece of land of his belonging was taken by the government and then a Museum was built in here. It is now open 6 days a weak except its weekly holiday, Thursday. It was inaugurated in 2013 by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The Panchagarh Rocks Museum is the first rocks museum of Bangladesh. It is located in Panchagarh Govt. Prof. Nazmul Haque, principal of Panchagarh Govt. Mohila College, established the rocks museum on March 1, 1997. The Rocks museum is separate into two galleries, external and internal. In the external gallery there has a vast number of rocks; and in the internal gallery, there are small stones of different ages.

Collection of Rocks: Petrified Wood and Fossilized Rocks, Granite, Quartzite Shell, Lime Stone, Sits, Hard Rock, Basalt, Silica, Nice, Clay-Rock etc. have been keep in the Rocks museum for display. These are almost 60 pieces of rocks from different age sized by 3-4 inches to 10 feet.

In the museum there are some other important collections. Two antiquarian boats which built with only one truck of tree and about 500 to 1000 years ago and Multicolored sand and earth, petrified 'shall wood' and net, very old pictured bamboo fearing, different type antics, very old writings.
