Brief

Kirtipasha Palace was named after King Kirty Narayana. Ramjibon sen founded the Kirtipasha palace. The jewels of the family are namely Rohini Roy and Tapon Roy. The contribution of Rohini Roy is Rohiniganj. There is a hospital in that area that is older than the Jhalakathi district hospital. There is also a family living near to the Shiva temple and Shiva’s statue.

Kirtipasha Zamindar Bari (কীর্ত্তিপাশা জমিদার বাড়ী) is located at the village Kirtipasha (কীর্ত্তিপাশা) of Jhalokathi district. This is probably a century old house. Now a days, it is abandoned and in a dilapidated condition. For most of the cases only the walls are standing, and the floors or ceilings are disappeared.

The name of the village is after the Zamindar Kirtinarayan Pasha (জমিদার কীর্তি নারায়ণ). And the founder of the Zamindar Bari was Ramjibon Sen. Only one of the building from this massive property was in good condition. Right now that one is a part of a girl’s school along with newly built buildings. The Zamindar Bari premise has a Shiva temple inside. And the remaining of a beautiful temple is also exists these days (only the columns and pillars).

How to go

It is very easy to access Kirtipasha Jomidar Bari (কীর্ত্তিপাশা জমিদার বাড়ী) from Jhalakathi (ঝালকাঠি) district town. You can take a battery driven vehicle (locally known as auto rickshaw) from the Fire Service Mor (ফায়ার সার্ভিস মোড়) that goes for the Kirtipasha (কীর্ত্তিপাশা) village. After that its a walking distance from there. You can ask to the locals if you need any help. GPS coordinate of the Kirtipasha Jomidar Bari (কীর্ত্তিপাশা জমিদার বাড়ী) is (22°40’54.18″N, 90°10’0.57″E).

From Dhaka, there are several launches use to go to Jhalakathi (ঝালকাঠি) and Barisal (বরিশাল). You can use any of those to reach directly at Jhalakathi (ঝালকাঠি), or you can reach at Barisal (বরিশাল) first, and then go to Jhalakathi (ঝালকাঠি) using local bus service. Launches for Barisal (বরিশাল) are bigger and most luxurious from Bangladesh. And its only 30 minutes of road distance between Barisal (বরিশাল) and Jhalakathi (ঝালকাঠি).

There are a few restaurants along highway road and in the local markets, most serving Bangladeshi standards. But expectations regarding food should not be high.

During 1850, the greater Gopalganj area was ruled by the Zamindar. At that time, they made hundreds of buildings for their residence and official purposes. The buildings were made in the traditional Zamindar Bari look and style. In the last 150 years, most of the houses were destroyed by erosion. After being taken by the government, the authority turned some of these houses into government buildings. Now, most of the houses are abandoned or occupied by local people.

There is a cluster of old buildings in the Ulpur Area which is situated in the Gopalgonj - Takerhat highway, not so far from the Gopalgonj main town. As soon as you cross the Ulpur bridge from Ulpur bazar, the buildings start to appear. The first one was used as the Union Land Office (Government) but is now abandoned. The local people over there are now using it to stock fodder.

The second was probably used as a duplex residential complex but now is being used as the Sub Post Office. The surrounding environment is good and the building is covered by bamboo stocks. In the main road, there is a large old building, which was probably the main building. Outside this building the words "Dinesh Dham" in Bengali is carved in a white slate. This building is currently occupied by some local inhabitants.

If we go farther, then we will see another broken house formerly used as the Upazilla Registry office, now almost completely in ruins. "Din-Dham" in Bengali is also carved outside he building in white stone.

The overall environment of this village is very good and peaceful. Walking for an hour in the silence of this area will be relaxing. The most attractive structure is the Temple. The walls of the temple is decorated with colorful glass & ceramics. The temple looks good but it is also abandoned so the temple has shifted into a newly constructed building.

Bhetarbandh Zamindar Bari or landlord house is located at Bhetarbandh village in Bhetarbandh union about 16 km far from Nageshwari sub district of Kurigram district. At the primary period of British ruling time, the headquarter of bhatarbandh pargana was at Rajshahi. After banned Permanent settlement law the bhatarbandh pargana headquarter transferred to Nageshwari sub district of Kurigram district. Wood made half part of the Landlord house is now lost. Now another half part of the house use as a union council office.

Pakutia Zamindar Bari resides under the administration of Nagarpur of Tangail district. This Zamindar Bari complex comprises of three main buildings. Out of these three, one is much larger compared to other two’s. The larger one is using as a Degree college these days and also the college authority holds the ownership of other two edifices as well. But they have rented Pakutia Zamindar Bari to other organization.

Initially the Zamindari was established by the hand of Ramkrishna Shaha Mondol at the early of 19th century. He has two sons named Radha Gobinda and Brindaban Chandra. Radha Gobinda didn't have any children but Brindaban Chandra had three. They are Brojendro Mohon, Upendra Mohon and Jogendra Mohon. Childless Radha Gobinda adopted the second son of his brother and later gave his whole property to him.

These three brothers later built three separate buildings for them in 1915 (almost 100 years from now). Each of the buildings are having extreme artwork & design, stylish columns, and small statues. Each inches of the building is having a delicate design that impresses everyone even these days. Top of the building is having a lovely sculpture type architecture that is rich in design, concept, and artwork (more if I consider the building period) in this modern days. Apart from these, there are several large ponds located at the backyard of the building.

This Zamindar family was friendly towards the villagers. They have established a school during 1916 named as Brindaban Chandra Radha Gobinda School (in short B.C.R.G. School) for their father and uncle. They have left this country during the 1947 separation. Later in 1967, the government established B.C.R.G Degree College on these buildings to commemorate the friendly Zamindar family. Apart from the Zamindar Bari, the premise now has a temple which probably used by the families who lived here. Also there is an open theater available that was used to arrange the local play or drama known as Jatra/Pala (যাত্রা/পালা).
